How Much Dye to Use:

  • General guideline: 1 bottle of liquid dye can dye about 2 pounds (≈ 1 kg) of dry fabric.

  • For a bolder / deeper color, you can increase the amount of dye used.

Dyeing Instructions:

  1. Pre-wash the fabric (in warm, soapy water, no fabric softener) to remove finishes.

  2. Use a plastic container, stainless steel sink, or washing machine as the dye bath.

  3. For natural fibers (cotton, linen, rayon, etc.): add 1 cup salt to the dye bath to enhance color.

  4. For silk, wool, or nylon: add 1 cup white vinegar to the dye bath instead.

  5. Also add 1 teaspoon (≈5 ml) of dish detergent to help level the dye. Shake the liquid dy

  6. Test the color by dipping a paper towel into the bath — adjust by adding more dye (if too light) or water (if too dark).

  7. Wet your fabric, squeeze out excess water, then submerge it in the dye bath. Stir slowly and continuously. The first 10 minutes are most critical for even coloring

  8. Let the fabric stay in the dye bath for 10 minutes up to 1 hour, depending on how dark you want the color.

  9. When done, remove the fabric. (Note: it will look darker when wet, and will dry lighter.)

  10. Optional but recommended: Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative right after dyeing to reduce bleeding, fading, and help set the color.

  11. Rinse in cool water until the water runs relatively clear.
