Dyeing Instructions:
-
Pre-wash the fabric (in warm, soapy water, no fabric softener) to remove finishes.
-
Use a plastic container, stainless steel sink, or washing machine as the dye bath.
-
For natural fibers (cotton, linen, rayon, etc.): add 1 cup salt to the dye bath to enhance color.
-
For silk, wool, or nylon: add 1 cup white vinegar to the dye bath instead.
-
Also add 1 teaspoon (≈5 ml) of dish detergent to help level the dye. Shake the liquid dy
-
Test the color by dipping a paper towel into the bath — adjust by adding more dye (if too light) or water (if too dark).
-
Wet your fabric, squeeze out excess water, then submerge it in the dye bath. Stir slowly and continuously. The first 10 minutes are most critical for even coloring
-
Let the fabric stay in the dye bath for 10 minutes up to 1 hour, depending on how dark you want the color.
-
When done, remove the fabric. (Note: it will look darker when wet, and will dry lighter.)
-
Optional but recommended: Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative right after dyeing to reduce bleeding, fading, and help set the color.
-
Rinse in cool water until the water runs relatively clear.
